TREACHEROUS BRIDGES CLOSER TO BEING REPLACED

The twin Waitaki River bridges between Kurow and Hakataramea that were closed five times in January 2011 are one step closer to being replaced after being included in the draft 2012-15 Canterbury regional land transport strategy. The proposal is to replace the 132 year old single-lane bridges with two-lane concrete bridges.  Listing the project in the draft programme is an important step towards funding being approved. The project is expected to cost at least $20 million. Submissions on the programme closed 20 April. See J96423 for full project listing.
