STRENGTHENING PROPOSED FOR 3,500 BUILDINGS

Approximately 3,500 unreinforced masonry buildings throughout New Zealand require structural strengthening to ensure that, in the event of a future earthquake, their collapse does not cause injury or loss of life. The Royal Commission’s interim report October 2011, on earthquake-related building failures in Canterbury, also suggested the need for updating seismic standards to include new findings on how earthquakes affect buildings. WOR is following numerous structural strengthening projects for 2011 and beyond, including Manurewa High School (J81913) and Defence House, Wellington (J89079).
