Hamilton City Council has granted land-use consent to SkyCity for a new five-star, three storey hotel to be built on top of the existing casino on Victoria Street. Plans have been kept tightly under wraps by SkyCity for the past 16 months, with the scope only being revealed through the public release of consent documents. The 9000 sq m extension will boast 135 luxury hotel rooms as well as eight two-storey premiere suites on a mezzanine floor. In keeping with this ostentatious theme there will be a grand atrium running vertically through the building as well as a pool, gymnasium, and sauna on level four. The project is expected to cost in or around $35 million and could get underway as early as December 2012. For more information see J122224.

Plans are also moving for a neighbouring project, Victoria on the River, that may be built in tandem with the casino extension. The four-storey mixed-use building will contain high quality office and retail stores as well as a public plaza and walkway that will link to the Waikato River. With approximately 60 percent of tenants signed up, we can expect to hear more about it in the coming weeks. For more information see J80789.
