Consents for new houses has reached levels not seen since September 2008, showing hopes for further recovery in the industry. The number of new residential dwellings consented (including apartments) was 1559 in March 2012 – a 43% increase since March 2011. The figures show a 33% increase since April 2011, which was the lowest point in the 30-year old consent records. Auckland and Canterbury look to have the largest increases, with Waimakariri as the biggest contributor. The values of residential consents have also been on the rise, up 30% in March 2012 compared to a year earlier.
