MEMORIAL CENTRE PROPOSED FOR GREY

Grey District Council is planning a new memorial centre for Greymouth’s High Street, to be built next to the Aquatic Centre. The proposed $5 million centre will be dedicated to miners who have died in West Coast mines. The government has pledged $3.5 million towards the project, following the Pike River mine blasts which killed 29 men in November 2010. The council is currently in negotiations over the purpose of the new centre and plans are expected to go out for public consultation in June 2011. See J91543 for further details on this project.
