MASTERTON COURTHOUSE FIRST TO BE STRENGTHENED

The courthouse in Masterton will be completely refitted and strengthened, commencing October 2012, at a cost of $3.5 million. The building will be strengthened to a hundred percent National Building Standards (NBS) and refitted with a new bail room, defendants’ dock, and public counters and toilets plus an expansion of the public waiting area (see WOR listing J136998 for further details). Masterton, along with Balclutha, Dunedin, Fielding Greymouth, Oamaru, Rangiora, and Upper Hutt Courthouses were closed earlier this year after being found to be less than thirty percent NBS. Plans to refurbish and strengthen the remaining courthouses are still being formulated and expected to progress towards the end of the year.
