MANAWATU STILL KEEN FOR CYCLING CENTRE

The battle over a $7 million grant for a national Cycling Centre of Excellence continues, with Palmerston North ready to step in should Waikato fail to secure its funding. The Waikato proposal is working through a notified consent process, with public submissions closing 22 August 2011. However, there are fears it is being rushed through and ratepayers will still be paying the bill in 20 years. The Manawatu bid has secured funding for the project with Massey vice-chancellor Steve Maharey saying the university was "set to roll" and had committed to the project: "there's no other place in New Zealand where there's an ability to combine a high performance centre with a university".
