KEEPING THE ELDERLY AT HOME

An innovative way of housing New Zealand’s elderly population has gained interest in recent months and may be the way forward in years to come. New developments involve a two or three bedroom house for the ‘young generation’ and a smaller attached house for their older relatives to live in. These homes are built with accessibility features, such as ramps and railings, and allow their elderly owner to be independent and close to their family. Housing companies, such as Jennian Homes in Nelson, have suggested that they may become popular as an alternative to retirement homes.
