The seemingly “permanent rebuild” of Christchurch may not happen for another nine to twelve months, according to Fletcher Construction CEO Jonathan Ling. The demolition programme of earthquake damaged buildings in the CBD has been relatively unaffected by the aftershocks and emergency repair projects are happening to prevent further damage to buildings. However, construction of new buildings will not happen until the number of aftershocks decrease. Almost 25% of commercial projects in the WOR for Christchurch are currently on hold, including projects for the education, office and retail sector.
