EARTHQUAKE-HIT HOSPITAL TO BE REDEVELOPED

Gerry Brownlee, Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Minister, announced the Ministry of Health’s plans to fast-track the redevelopment of Burwood Hospital at a cost of approximately $500 million. The earthquake-damaged hospital was identified as needing a major overhaul in 2008, but the redevelopment was put on hold following the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. The redevelopment will include additional operating theatres, the replacement of approximately 500 beds, and an expansion of the intensive-care unit and accident and emergency department. The final business plan is expected to be completed by December 2012.
