Industry leaders predict that an up-turn in construction is imminent, saying it isn’t a matter of if, but when it will happen. “Very soon” are the words on the lips of Mainzeal’s chief executive Peter Gomm. The ingredients are already here, with Christchurch’s post-earthquake rebuild, usual demand for new houses, and leaky building remediation, particularly in the Auckland area. Work on infrastructure has already seen significant growth, and will continue to grow – both in Christchurch and nationally. An Infometrics forecast made in July 2011 expected that new, post-earthquake house-building in Canterbury would accelerate most rapidly between June 2012 and June 2013, with activity peaking by September 2014; 95% of the work is likely to be completed by March 2018.
