A coalition of 18 heritage and resident groups are campaigning for Auckland Council to publicly notify all applications to demolish houses in character areas. This group, known as ‘The Character Coalition’, is frustrated at a lack of input in the current planning process, and looks to Brisbane as a model of how to treat planning with historic buildings. The coalition is frustrated at how previous historic buildings and areas were destroyed for “often inappropriate” developments. The group notes that in the face of a similar problem in the ‘90s, Brisbane adopted methods of protecting heritage buildings. The coalition wants community-driven local plans that include; demolition control precincts, including public notification for demolition and a design code for buildings, and a heritage code to foster retention.
