BUILDING SAFETY TO BE MADE SIMPLER

A brand new 5-star rating system is being put in place as an easier way of judging how safe a building would be in an earthquake. The Quake Star Project is based on a concept under development in California, and has the backing of the Earthquake Engineering Society. According to Wellington engineering consultant David Hopkins, the system at present, which involves “quick and dirty” building assessments, is unreliable and unsafe. The simpler and more reliable star rating system would be useful to owners, tenants, real estate agents and property buyers. From a commercial perspective, the system could be advantageous to 4 or 5 star rated building owners by displaying their rating. Most importantly, it would encourage people to strengthen their buildings.
