Rigorous standards are being introduced in Christchurch by the Department of Building and Housing, which could add an extra 10 per cent on to building costs. A new standard for building foundations is about to go before Cabinet and indicates six recommended foundation types acceptable in terms of being engineered to higher quake standards.

Mike Greer of Greer Homes Christchurch was reported to comment that it was unnecessary for the higher standards to be mandatory in areas unaffected by liquefaction.
