Christchurch developer Jamie Thomas, of JGM Group, has revealed plans to build up to 1000 pre-fabricated accommodation units for rebuild workers. The accommodation units will be self-contained, with an ensuite bathroom, kitchenette, living area, study area, and walk-in wardrobe plus patio space at the front door. Thomas is currently in negotiations with Christchurch City Council about putting a 250-unit accommodation village on the Turner and Growers site in the CBD. The 18,000 square meter bare site, which has been earmarked for a $200 million sports stadium (J132433) in the recently-released Central City Plan, is expected to remain unused for some years with priority being the reconstruction of the city’s convention centre and town hall. Thomas is also looking for three similar-sized sites within or around the four avenues, and expects the first accommodation village to be open in time for Easter 2013.
